Press release n. 3, April 2008

An international summit to discuss world hunger and the key role that technology can play in trying to find solutions to this problem.

This is the main subject of the rich program of events on schedule during IPACK-IMA 2009 – the exhibition for processing, packaging and logistics on stage from March 24th to 28th in Milan, Italy – made possible with the support of the Ministry for Agricultural, Environmental and Food Policies with the help of qualified Organizations of United Nations (FAO, UNIDO, IFAD and PAM). "We have recently learned about the decision of the Ministry for Agricultural, Environmental and Food Policies to grant us its patronage in organizing an event which will be discussing such vital issues for all mankind. The world food crisis is one of the hottest current issues. Never before has it been so important to give decisive answers. Adequate production systems can play a fundamental role in the technological upgrade of growing markets with the purpose of reducing the waste of food resources and ensure the consumption of safe food. In other words: more technology, less world hunger", says Guido Corbella, Ipack-Ima Spa CEO. Hunger and food safety are nothing new, in fact they are very old problems. However, today they have changed: in all developed countries, famines have been averted once and for all by abundant and regular harvests, easy trading relations and advanced food preservation techniques. Unfortunately, the gap between developed and developing countries is still very deep, often due to inadequate food processing, preservation and distribution methods. According to FAO, over 850 million people in the world suffer from hunger and thirst.

IPACK-IMA, an international showcase of excellence for food industry technology, in particular for grain-based food processing and packaging and for the bread industry, is the perfect venue for positive debate. The topics of the debate and the size of the event will call upon national and international financial, monetary and productive systems. This is why a meeting will soon be organized between representatives of the Ministry for Agricultural, Environmental and Food Policies and spokespeople from international bodies to plan specific actions. The agenda includes the selection of delegates from growing countries where there are plans for technology development and the organization of dedicated conventions and meetings. "We underline the fortunate coincidence with the Expo 2015 in Milan, with the motto "Feeding the planet, Energy for Life". The subject will be food quality and safety and the role of "Made in Italy" products. IPACK-IMA will certainly give a precious contribution to our country’s international image, together with the Italian packaging machinery industry which in 2007 exported as much as 90% of the total production", says Mr. Corbella.
